Hiking in the Valley of the Alms – one of the most beautiful valleys in the Alps
The alpine summer in Großarl is as genuine as the dairymaids and dairymen on the rustic alpine huts who manage these and welcome hikers. On around 400 km of well-marked hiking trails, which lead into the Hohe Tauern National Park, you can visit 40 alms and mountain huts. Here you can have a refreshing break with local delicacies such as bacon, alpine cheese, butter, milk and schnapps.
Hike through cool forests, to thundering waterfalls, across flowering alpine meadows, along clear mountain lakes and up to the peaks with almost endless views into the distance. Draw energy from nature, fill up on fresh air, experience one of the healthiest endurance sports – welcome to the open-air cinema “Alps”. Hiking is beneficial for body, mind and soul and on many a mountain peak you feel very close to heaven.
The Großarltal is a hiker’s paradise and captivates with its impressive mountain scenery. The Gamskarkogel, with its cosy hut, is the highest grassy mountain in Europe at 2,467 m and a silent witness to the unique vegetation of this valley. But not only the variety of alpine flowers and herbs is captivating, but also the wildlife with roe deer, deer, chamois, marmots and co.
You can create hiking tours in advance on the interactive hiking map. For those who don’t want to go that high, there is the Kapellenweg (chapel trail) along the valley floor which is approx. 15 km long. What else is there to do in the beautiful Großarltal in Salzburger Land: Salzburg Almenweg (hiking), trekking, running and Nordic walking, climbing, tennis, mini golf, heated outdoor pool and mountain railways.
The Großarltal has been awarded with the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality
The Großarltal has passed a strict quality inspection and is the first tourist destination in the province of Salzburg and the second region in the whole of Austria to be awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. Proof of the competence in hiking in the Valley of the Alms. The seal of quality was awarded by the “Association for Quality Assurance for Hiking in Austria” and we are particularly proud of this.
