Winter in the Grossarltal valley has many sides – and some of the most beautiful begin where the groomed ski slopes end. Snow-covered forests, cleared winter hiking trails, scenic snowshoe tours, and cross-country ski trails along the Grossarler Ache invite you to discover the mountain world mindfully and at your own pace. Things get lively while sledding, while a horse-drawn sleigh ride offers particularly peaceful insights into the wintry landscape.

At Kathrin – pure alpine living you stay centrally in Großarl and can quickly reach numerous winter activities in the Salzburger Land. As a guest, you can also participate in selected BERG-GESUND offers free of charge. After your winter experience, the heated indoor pool, sauna, infrared cabin, and relaxation room await you in the house – perfect for warming up again and ending the day in a relaxed way.

BERG-GESUND in winter

As a guest of Kathrin – pure alpine living, you can participate in selected winter activities from BERG-GESUND free of charge. Experienced guides accompany beginners and advanced participants, for example, on snowshoe hikes and ski tours. As the number of participants is limited, early registration is recommended. Transfers, rental equipment, drinks, and snacks are not included.

Cross-country skiing in Großarl

On approximately 25 kilometers of groomed trails, you can explore the Großarltal in classic style or by skating. The entry point at Reitwiese leads along the Ache towards Hüttschlag and offers routes for beginners and athletic cross-country skiers. A short circular trail, an obstacle course for children, and an illuminated night trail complement the offer. Equipment and courses are available directly in Großarl.

Peace, vastness, and clear winter air

Winter hiking in the Grossarltal valley

Around 45 kilometers of cleared winter hiking trails lead through Großarl, Hüttschlag, and the wintery valley head. Short walks are just as possible as longer hikes through snow-covered forests and along the Großarler Ache. Particularly atmospheric are the fairy tale hikes by torchlight, where stories, legends, and natural sounds accompany you through the winter forest. Snowshoeing in Großarl

During snowshoeing, quiet paths lead you through snow-covered forests and over deeply wintery alpine pastures. Guided tours are particularly suitable for first-time experiences and provide important knowledge about technique, equipment, and safety. Popular destinations include the Loosbühelalm, the Karseggalm, and the Ellmautal. Before each tour, weather, snow conditions, and avalanche situation should be observed.

Into the valley on two runners

Sledding in the Grossarltal valley

At Lammwirt and Loosbühelalm, two natural toboggan runs, each about three kilometers long, await winter guests young and old. After the ascent on foot or a comfortable ride up, you can refuel in the hut and then toboggan down into the valley with momentum. Rental toboggans are available from the respective providers. Current opening hours and conditions depend on snow and weather conditions.

Sleigh rides through the Grossarl Valley

Warmly wrapped, you glide with a horse-drawn sleigh through the snow-covered landscape of Großarl or into the valley head of Hüttschlag. The quiet sound of the runners and the winter mountain panorama make the ride a special experience for couples, families, and groups. Dates and routes are offered by various providers in the region. Advance reservation is recommended.
